Rin did not fight back even when prompted. He ran away. The lake was poisoned, and he died from it while swimming across to the other side.

[ he shuts his eyes, very still for a moment. he'd tried to convince himself that rin started fighting back. he'd really wanted to believe that. ]

Then why didn't I get poisoned?

I do not know, so I cannot say. Perhaps it became diluted enough after so long it didn't work.

he brings his legs up to curl against his chest, hugging his knees. ]

I don't think it was because he was weakest, or even to make him suffer. But their reasons are personal and their own.
