[ IT'S NOT HIS FAULT, at least he's being polite enough not to do it around him??? ]
A family tradition thing. Does that mean you actually have a name? [ i am not having him ask for it because i assume it's anime bs where it isn't ever given. ] Guess I'll stick with D.
No, I have one. [This is said placidly; no elation, but also no sadness.] He was born recently. Grandfather is raising him. It became my duty to run the pet shop.
Oh. [ ...still weird, but a little less. ] When you say it's your duty, it...sounds like you might not actually have much of a choice. Is that actually true?
[ literally none of this is important but now he's just highkey curious, this sucks. ]
What happens to the pet shop if it doesn't have someone running it? Doesn't it just...go out of business like a normal shop? [ why does d have a way of making everything sound so ominous. ]
[not all of your characters getting all the lore while i learn nothing
(jonas voice) u came to check on me but im gonna ask u questions]
That is something that must not be allowed to happen. Everyone needs a pet of some kind. In the past, in the present, in the future; there will always be people who are in need of a pet.
...[ he is slowly getting the sense that there is definitely Something about this pet shop that is not a normal pet shop, but he's not going to outright ask because it doesn't matter here. probably. help. ]
[Wow, it is a completely normal pet shop that sells pets to people who come in to buy. Nothing nefarious is going on here?? He has never been arrested.]
We don't force anyone to come. But when they do, we find them a pet.
[He sounds a little amused, but not in a mocking way.]
There have been people who come in and leave again. Most of the time, if they truly are looking for a pet, they return. Many have returned a pet, either by choice or by breaking the contract they sign.
Guidelines on how best to care for them, of course. We have stipulations for each pet as each pet has different needs, and we go over them with the customer before the purchase. They have to understand if they break any of the guidelines of ownership, the pet shop is not responsible for what happens.
Zero liability. [ okay. he thinks he gets that. ] But that doesn't sound like it'd be that hard. If it's written out and everything shouldn't it be pretty straightforward how to take care of each pet?
You are aware of how difficult it is to care for one, so I don't think this instance applies to you. The people who fail at taking care of their pet are usually always the ones who are the most confident.
Yes. There have been a few times people have tried to return a pet, but I refused. And there have been times when I have taken the pet, but asked them to pick another.
Yes. Sometimes, they learn to change, and they want that pet back after getting the new one. Sometimes, they do not think that pet is right for them, and I won't force the animal to suffer. So we find them another.
[ ...all of that makes sense in a way he can't really refute. ]
Sounds like you're really good at your job then, D. [ granted, if he kind of has no choice in the matter it makes sense. ] All the more reason to figure out a way back?

Either of those are fine. Neither one are my name. It is a title inherited from my grandfather, the name of his pet shop.

You...[ he squints. ] I did not think you had a son. Unless this is like a future son scenario. [ jonas, internally: AREN'T YOU LIKE IN YOUR 20s???? ]

That's true. The pet shop must always have someone who runs it. That is why there are two of us. Father and son.

Oh, yes.

You would think so, wouldn't you? Taking care of a pet, however, is more difficult for some people than they initially think.

I am, if I may say so. [He isn't arrogant enough to puff up at this, though. Modest... A nice man.] Yes.
I have a duty I cannot turn away from, to protect the world and the life on it.
