Where I come from, the entire planet is... basically just a huge desert. Barely enough water for everyone to drink, let alone... anything else.

A bit like this one. At least, in some places. Cities, towns, highways. Natural places of reprieve and beauty are slowly being taken over by the modern age of man. Only the harshest places are the ones which have survived industrialization so far.
